Tinubu Pushes for State Police, Backs Lawmakers’ Return Ahead of 2027
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has again advocated the establishment of state police as part of efforts to strengthen security nationwide, while also pledging support for initiatives aimed at improving the re-election chances of members of the House of Representatives of Nigeria.
The President made the remarks on Friday at the State House, Abuja, during an interfaith breaking of fast with lawmakers.
Tinubu commended the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, for his leadership and commitment to national development, noting that the strong turnout of lawmakers reflected unity and effective coordination within the House.
He assured legislators of his willingness to support their political future, particularly in constituencies where rotational arrangements exist, expressing hope that more members would secure re-election in the next polls.
On the economy, Tinubu expressed optimism that Nigeria had moved past its most difficult phase, saying initial resistance to key policies—such as subsidy removal—had eased as conditions improved.
He credited lawmakers for their cooperation, stating that their collaboration helped the government navigate early challenges.
In his remarks, Abbas appreciated the President for sustaining the tradition of hosting lawmakers for Ramadan, describing the overlap of Ramadan and Lent as symbolic and significant.
The Speaker praised Tinubu’s leadership, noting that economic indicators such as declining inflation and increased agricultural activities suggest the country is on a positive trajectory.
He, however, raised concerns about the high turnover of legislators after elections, warning that losing up to 80 percent of members undermines legislative continuity and efficiency.
Abbas appealed for the President’s support in ensuring more lawmakers return in future elections to preserve institutional knowledge and strengthen governance.
