DSS rearrests ex-AGF Malami after Kuje prison release

Abubakar Malami, former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, has been rearrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) shortly after regaining freedom from the Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja, on January 19, 2026.

Malami’s arrest followed the completion of his bail conditions in a case instituted against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). However, moments after his release, he was taken into DSS custody over fresh allegations bordering on terrorism financing and unlawful possession of arms.

Sources disclosed that the DSS action stems from the discovery of arms and ammunition at Malami’s residence in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State. The weapons were reportedly uncovered during an EFCC-led search linked to its financial crime investigation. As offences relating to illegal arms fall outside the EFCC’s jurisdiction, the matter was subsequently transferred to the DSS for further probe.

The former justice minister is currently facing a 16-count charge by the EFCC over alleged money laundering involving more than ₦8 billion. The charges also list his wife, Asabe Bashir, and his son, Abdulaziz Malami, as co-defendants.

According to the anti-graft agency, Malami and the others allegedly used companies, properties and Bureau De Change operators to conceal and channel funds for the acquisition of luxury properties across several states.

While terrorism financing allegations are not yet part of the formal EFCC charges, security sources say the claims are central to the DSS investigation. Malami has denied any involvement in terrorism-related activities.

Malami’s legal challenges began after the EFCC commenced investigations into his tenure as Attorney General, focusing on alleged corruption and money laundering. Although he was earlier granted bail, his release was delayed amid concerns that he could be rearrested by security agencies.

He was eventually freed after meeting bail conditions, only to be immediately taken into custody by the DSS for further investigation.
