Yewa Traditional Rulers Reject Adebutu’s Governorship Bid, Back Yayi for 2027
Traditional rulers across the Yewa area of Ogun State have reportedly rejected the governorship ambition of Ladi Adebutu, declaring that no amount of financial inducement would persuade them to support his 2027 bid.
The monarchs were said to have taken the position during a meeting with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ilaro on Wednesday. The meeting was chaired by the Olu of Ilaro, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle.
According to an eyewitness, the traditional rulers collectively walked out of the meeting, insisting there was no room for compromise on their preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.
A traditional ruler who spoke anonymously said the monarchs and other stakeholders in Yewa had unanimously endorsed Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as their preferred candidate for governor.
The source said the decision was driven by a long-standing desire for Ogun West Senatorial District to produce the state’s governor for the first time.
“We have been in the political dungeon for several decades in Ogun State. We are the only Senatorial District that has not produced a governor. This is our best chance, and we are not ready to back down on the opportunity to liberate Ogun West,” the traditional ruler said.
The development signals growing support within Yewa for the agitation that the 2027 governorship should be zoned to Ogun West, with local stakeholders insisting the district deserves the opportunity to occupy the state’s highest political office.
