Wike assures FCT residents of accelerated development

Free Elections in 2026 New Year Message

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, CON, has assured residents of Abuja and its satellite communities of accelerated development, improved infrastructure, and a peaceful political atmosphere in 2026.

In his New Year message to residents on Wednesday, Wike expressed appreciation for the cooperation and support of FCT residents in the past year, noting that their collaboration enabled the administration to overcome major challenges and record significant achievements.

The minister said the FCT Administration has already laid the foundation for major projects and programmes across critical sectors, including education, health, transportation, agriculture, security, and the judiciary. According to him, residents should expect the commissioning of rehabilitated schools, roads, bridges, health facilities, transportation hubs, judicial facilities, and security infrastructure in the course of the year.

Wike disclosed that 2026 would also mark the third anniversary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, adding that the FCT plans to commemorate the milestone by showcasing tangible projects that directly improve the quality of life of residents.

He attributed ongoing development across the territory—from Abuja Municipal Area Council to Abaji, Kuje, and Kwali—to President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, while appealing for continued presidential support to sustain and expand development efforts.

Highlighting the importance of civic responsibility, the minister urged residents to remain law-abiding and to uphold the virtues of diligence, discipline, and determination in pursuit of collective progress.

Wike noted that 2026 is particularly significant as it marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Federal Capital Territory, describing the golden jubilee as a testament to national unity, peaceful coexistence, and the vision of Nigeria’s founding fathers.

On the political front, the minister drew attention to the forthcoming Area Council elections scheduled to hold in the six area councils of the FCT, calling on eligible voters to exercise their franchise responsibly. He assured residents that the FCT Administration would ensure a free, fair, and violence-free electoral process.

He also pledged that the administration would provide a conducive environment for political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, noting that the FCT, as the nation’s capital, would host significant political engagements.

Concluding his message, Wike called on residents to embrace unity and shared purpose, expressing optimism that 2026 would usher in greater peace, prosperity, and progress for the Federal Capital Territory.

He wished residents and their families a joyful, peaceful, and prosperous New Year.
