We need to raise the bar in agriculture

By Nick Agule

If the farms in Benue do not look like this, then we have not yet begun the journey toward true industrial agriculture.

Farming that relies on bending down methods using human muscle is not agriculture in the true sense – it is merely subsistence, with only a small surplus trickling into the markets.

No surprise, then, that our farmers are born in poverty, raised in poverty, live in poverty, die in poverty, and leave that same poverty as an inheritance to their children. The cycle continues, unbroken.

Nigeria is standing outside Africa’s agricultural revolution – watching, instead of leading – because we have not embraced land clearing at scale and the use of machine power on our farms.

But we have a clear plan to transform Benue’s farmlands into modern, mechanised agricultural zones – and to lift our farmers into true prosperity.

Our rich, fertile soils are wealth beyond gold.
