Fubara receives APC membership card, formalises defection from PDP

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has officially received his All Progressives Congress (APC) membership card, formalising his alignment with the ruling party following his recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The presentation of the membership card took place at the Government House in Port Harcourt, where the Rivers APC leadership led by State Chairman Tony Okocha personally handed over the card to the governor.

The brief ceremony on Friday was attended by several party officials, including Rivers APC Secretary and publicity representatives, underscoring the importance the party places on Fubara’s induction.

Also present was the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, who was in Port Harcourt for unrelated federal engagements but witnessed the registration process.

Fubara’s receipt of the APC membership card follows his defection from the PDP earlier this week, a move that significantly alters the political landscape in Rivers State.

The governor has been one of the most high-profile political figures in the South-South region to switch allegiance to the ruling party, a trend that has seen several lawmakers and political leaders realign with the APC in recent days.

In his remarks during the event, Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the APC’s presence in Rivers State and aligning the state’s political agenda with that of the federal government.

Party officials described the handover as an important step in consolidating the APC’s influence ahead of future electoral cycles.

The PDP has criticised Fubara’s defection, characterising it as a setback for the party and a sign of internal challenges, but the governor has maintained that his move serves the interests of political stability and development in Rivers.

What This Means Politically:
Fubara’s formal membership in the APC not only cements his break with the PDP but also signals a shift in the balance of power in Nigeria’s South-South region, where opposition parties have traditionally held significant influence. The governor’s alignment with the ruling party is likely

to shape political negotiations and strategies as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.
