UN Women commends Nigeria for implementing Beijing Platform for Action
UN Women has commended Nigeria for its significant progress in implementing the Beijing Platform for Action, particularly in areas such as women’s political participation, economic empowerment, education, and the fight against gender-based violence.
Ms. Beatrice Eyong, UN Women Country Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, acknowledged Nigeria’s achievements while emphasizing the need for collective action to address emerging challenges. She reiterated UN Women’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in fast-tracking gender-responsive policies ¹.
The Beijing Platform for Action, adopted in 1995, identified 12 critical areas of concern that require urgent action, including:
- Women and Poverty: Addressing economic disparities and promoting financial inclusion.
- Education and Training of Women: Enhancing access to quality education and vocational training.
- Women and Health: Improving healthcare services and addressing gender-based health disparities.
- Violence Against Women: Combating domestic violence, sexual harassment, and other forms of gender-based violence.
- Women and Armed Conflict: Protecting women’s rights in conflict zones and promoting peaceful resolution.
Other areas of concern include women’s economic empowerment, women in power and decision-making, institutional mechanisms for women’s advancement, human rights, women and the media, women and the environment, and the girl child.
Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, emphasized the importance of celebrating Nigeria’s achievements and addressing challenges to women’s economic empowerment and gender equality. She encouraged participants to critically review reports and identify best practices for future implementation.
