Tinubu suspends trips to South Africa, Angola amid security crises

President Bola Tinubu has halted his planned visits to South Africa and Angola as he awaits comprehensive security reports on the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the bandit attack on worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eruku, Kwara State.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, November 19, 2025. He explained that the President, acting on a request from the Kwara State Governor, directed the deployment of additional security personnel to Eruku and the wider Ekiti Local Government Area following the recent assault by armed bandits.

Tinubu had been scheduled to depart Abuja on Wednesday for the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit in South Africa, with a subsequent stop in Luanda for the 7th AU-EU Summit.

Onanuga stated that the President decided to postpone his departure after being briefed on the escalating security concerns in Kebbi and the attack on the CAC congregation in Kwara.

He noted that Tinubu is now awaiting updates from Vice President Kashim Shettima—who visited Kebbi on his behalf—as well as detailed reports from the police and the Department of State Services.

The President reaffirmed his instruction to security agencies to intensify efforts toward rescuing the 24 abducted schoolgirls and ensuring their safe return home.
