Nigerian Navy Arrests Suspected Pipeline Vandals in Bayelsa
The Nigerian Navy has arrested suspected pipeline vandals in Bayelsa State as part of ongoing operations to curb crude oil theft in the Niger Delta.
According to a press statement issued on April 28, 2026, naval personnel attached to the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Formoso carried out a targeted raid on April 25 at about 3:00 a.m. in Egbama-Angalabiri, located in Ekeramo Local Government Area.
The operation, based on credible intelligence, led to the arrest of a suspect identified as Godwin, popularly known as “Idiot,” who is alleged to be the leader of a pipeline vandalism syndicate operating around the Clough Creek axis.
The Navy said the arrest followed sustained intelligence gathering and surveillance, which revealed the suspect’s involvement in recent attacks on oil and gas infrastructure. He was apprehended at a nearby night market, where he was reportedly collecting illegal levies from traders.
During a follow-up search of the suspect’s residence, naval operatives encountered armed resistance from members of the syndicate.
However, the situation was quickly brought under control through a coordinated response, forcing the attackers to retreat.
A search of the premises led to the recovery of two handheld radios and other equipment believed to be used in illegal operations.
Further intelligence obtained during the operation resulted in the arrest of another suspect, identified as Happiness, and the recovery of a pump-action gun.
Both suspects have been handed over to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s maritime domain and critical infrastructure, warning criminal elements to desist from acts of economic sabotage or face decisive action.
