Police Accused of Extrajudicial Killing in Delta as CAIDOV Demands Justice

A civil rights group, Centre Against Injustice and Domestic Violence, has condemned the alleged killing of a young man, Ogidi Mena, by police operatives in Effurun, describing the incident as a “cold-blooded murder.”

In a statement issued on April 29, 2026, by it’s Executive Director, Comrade Gbenga Soloki, the group accused officers attached to the Nigeria Police Force’s Efurun Area Command in Uvwie of carrying out what it called an extrajudicial execution on April 28.

According to CAIDOV, video evidence shows the victim seated on the ground in front of a marked police vehicle, unarmed and posing no threat at the time he was shot. The organization said the act violates Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees the right to life, as well as established rules of engagement for law enforcement.

“This is murder,” the statement said, stressing that the killing reflects a broader pattern of police brutality against young Nigerians.

CAIDOV issued a series of demands, including the immediate arrest and dismissal of all officers present at the scene, as well as the prosecution of those directly responsible. The group rejected the idea of internal disciplinary proceedings, insisting on formal homicide charges.

It also called for a public investigation by the National Human Rights Commission and the Police Service Commission within seven days, alongside compensation and a formal apology to the victim’s family.

The statement was signed by Gbenga Soloki, who urged authorities to take urgent action to restore public trust and end unlawful killings by security agencies.

As of the time of reporting, the police have not issued an official response to the allegations.
