Just In: Nasir El-Rufai’s Bail Collapses as Surety Withdraws
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has remained in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following the collapse of his bail arrangement.
The development comes after a surety who had initially agreed to stand in for the former governor reportedly withdrew, leading to a dramatic setback in efforts to secure his release.
El-Rufai is currently under investigation by the anti-graft agency over the alleged misappropriation of more than N433 billion during his eight-year tenure as governor of Kaduna State.
The EFCC had earlier granted him administrative bail, subject to the fulfillment of specific conditions, including the provision of credible sureties.
Sources familiar with the matter disclosed that the withdrawal of the surety stalled the process, resulting in the former governor remaining in EFCC custody pending the arrangement of a replacement surety who meets the commission’s requirements.
While the EFCC has yet to issue an official statement on the latest development, the case has continued to generate significant political and public interest, given El-Rufai’s high-profile status and his influence in national politics.
It remains unclear when a new bail arrangement will be finalized, as investigations into the alleged financial infractions continue.
