Jimoh Ibrahim Elected Chairman of UN Fifth Committee

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, has been elected Chairman of the United Nations General Assembly’s Fifth Committee, the body responsible for overseeing the organisation’s budget, finance and administrative matters.

The appointment places Nigeria in a key leadership position within the UN system, as the Fifth Committee is the principal organ that examines and approves the UN’s financial and administrative policies. The committee is responsible for reviewing the organisation’s regular budget, peacekeeping budgets, human resources management, and member states’ financial assessments.

As chairman, Ibrahim will preside over discussions and negotiations involving the allocation of resources for UN programmes and operations, helping to guide decisions on some of the organisation’s most critical financial and administrative issues.

The election is being viewed as a significant diplomatic achievement for Nigeria, reflecting the country’s growing influence within the United Nations and the broader international community.

The Fifth Committee plays a central role in ensuring the effective management of the UN’s resources and the implementation of policies aimed at supporting the organisation’s global mandate.
