INEC Denies Reported Database Breach, Assures Nigerians of Data Security
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed reports alleging that its database was breached, assuring Nigerians that its systems remain secure and uncompromised.
The clarification follows concerns raised on social media after screenshots purportedly showing access to INEC’s voter database were circulated online, prompting questions about the security of the electoral body’s records.
INEC maintained that its voter database and related digital infrastructure are protected by multiple security measures designed to prevent unauthorized access. The commission stressed that there is no evidence to support claims that its systems have been hacked or that voter information has been compromised.
The development comes amid growing public debate over allegations involving access to electoral data, with some stakeholders calling for further clarification on how the screenshots emerged. Veteran journalist Reuben Abati has also called for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the claims.
INEC urged Nigerians to disregard unverified reports and rely on official communication from the commission for accurate information. The electoral body reiterated its commitment to safeguarding voter data and ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.
The commission has consistently maintained that protecting the national voters’ register remains a top priority and that measures are in place to detect and prevent any attempt to compromise its database.
