2026 FIFA World Cup Ball Features Built-In Sensor, Real-Time Tracking Technology

The official match ball for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to introduce advanced technology that could transform how football matches are officiated and analyzed.
According to FIFA and Adidas, the ball is equipped with a built-in sensor and battery system, making it far more than a traditional football. Before matches, the ball is charged to power its internal tracking technology.
At the heart of the innovation is a tiny 14-gram electronic sensor capable of transmitting data up to 500 times per second. The system records every touch, pass, shot and deflection during a game, providing officials and analysts with highly detailed real-time information.
The technology is integrated with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system and stadium tracking infrastructure, enabling the creation of precise 3D representations of match incidents. FIFA says the sensor can detect the exact moment a player makes contact with the ball, improving the accuracy of offside decisions and helping officials assess contentious handball situations.
The development marks another step in football’s growing use of technology, with performance and match events now measured in unprecedented detail.
FIFA and Adidas stated that the sensor’s battery can operate for approximately six hours, covering the duration of a match and related activities.
The introduction of the smart match ball is expected to enhance decision-making, reduce officiating errors and provide deeper insights into player and team performance during the tournament.
