The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has assured residents and political stakeholders in Ekiti State of adequate security and professional conduct by officers of the Nigeria Police Force ahead of the forthcoming governorship election in the state.
Disu gave the assurance on Thursday during the Election Stakeholders’ Meeting and Signing of the Peace Accord held in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.
The meeting brought together representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), members of the National Peace Committee led by former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, political parties, candidates, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, security agencies, religious leaders, diplomats, and election observers.
Speaking at the event, the IGP reaffirmed the readiness of the Nigeria Police Force to ensure a peaceful, secure, free, and credible electoral process across the state.
He commended Independent National Electoral Commission and the National Peace Committee for sustaining efforts aimed at promoting peaceful democratic participation and strengthening public confidence in the electoral process.
Disu particularly praised Abdulsalami Abubakar for his continued commitment to peace, national unity, and democratic stability in the country.
The police boss further disclosed that comprehensive deployment plans and operational strategies had been concluded for all the 16 local government areas, 154 wards, and more than 2,400 polling units across Ekiti State.
According to him, personnel and operational assets have been strategically positioned to guarantee the safety of voters, electoral officials, observers, and other participants during the election.
The IGP also assured that the Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with other security agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), would remain professional and impartial throughout the electoral process.
He urged political actors and their supporters to abide by the Peace Accord and conduct their campaigns and activities peacefully.
Disu equally encouraged eligible voters in Ekiti State to exercise their constitutional rights without fear, assuring residents of adequate security before, during, and after the governorship poll.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to protecting democratic values, maintaining public order, and ensuring peaceful elections across the country.
