Former CJN Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad Dies at 71

Nigeria’s former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, has passed away at the age of 71.

Justice Muhammad, a native of Giade in Bauchi State, died on Monday, family sources confirmed. Details surrounding his death were not immediately disclosed.

He was appointed Chief Justice of Nigeria in 2019 by then President Muhammadu Buhari, becoming the head of the Nigerian judiciary at a critical period in the country’s democratic journey. He served in that capacity until 2022, when he retired from office due to health challenges.

Widely regarded as a respected jurist and seasoned legal practitioner, Justice Muhammad had a long career in the judiciary, during which he earned a reputation for discipline, scholarship, and commitment to the rule of law. Beyond his judicial career, he was also known as an Islamic scholar, respected for his deep knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence.

Tributes have begun to pour in from across the legal community, political leaders, and members of the public, who described him as a man of integrity and learning.

Muslim faithful have also offered prayers for the repose of his soul, asking Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.
