Veteran Journalist Dotun Oladipo Dies at 56 After Sudden Health Emergency
The Nigerian journalism community has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of veteran journalist and publisher of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo.
Oladipo, 56, who was also an emeritus President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), reportedly died on Tuesday evening, August 25, 2026, after suffering a sudden health emergency.
According to colleagues and close associates, the journalist appeared to be in good health earlier in the day and had continued with his usual activities.
He was said to have gone to the gym with his wife before proceeding with his engagements and even made a social media post only hours before his death.
The tragedy reportedly occurred later in the evening while Oladipo was on his way to a meeting. After suddenly becoming ill, he reportedly sought help and was able to connect with his doctor by telephone through a bystander.
Despite efforts by people around him to assist and follow the doctor’s instructions, Oladipo could not be revived and died before receiving medical attention.
Although the exact cause of death has yet to be officially confirmed, preliminary reports indicate that he may have suffered a heart attack.
Oladipo had a distinguished career in journalism, having worked with prominent media organisations, including The Punch, before establishing The Eagle Online, where he became a respected voice in Nigeria’s emerging digital media industry.
His death is coming about 18 months after he, his wife and daughter narrowly survived the Otedola Bridge tanker fire in March 2025. The devastating incident destroyed his vehicle, while his longtime mechanic, Rotimi Olaleye, died in the fire.
The sudden passing of the respected journalist has sent shockwaves across Nigeria’s media community, particularly among members of GOCOP and online publishers.
Colleagues, friends and associates have continued to mourn Oladipo while extending condolences and prayers to his family.
His death represents another major loss to Nigeria’s journalism profession, coming at a time when his experience and contributions remained highly valued within the country’s digital media landscape.
