NBA threatens legal action against IGP, Police Spokesman over tinted glass permit policy

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has threatened to commence committal proceedings against the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, and the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, over the planned resumption of the suspended motor vehicle tinted glass permit policy.

The threat follows the Nigeria Police Force’s announcement that enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy will resume nationwide from January 2, 2026.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the NBA expressed strong opposition to the move, describing it as unlawful and contrary to existing court decisions that had suspended the policy.

The association warned that any attempt to enforce the directive without addressing the legal issues surrounding it would amount to a violation of the rule of law.

According to the NBA, previous court orders restraining the police from enforcing the policy remain valid and binding, stressing that the police authorities cannot unilaterally revive the enforcement without first complying with judicial directives.

The association cautioned that if the police proceed with the implementation as announced, it would have no option but to initiate committal proceedings against the IGP and the Force Public Relations Officer for contempt of court.

The NBA also raised concerns that the policy, if enforced, could expose motorists to harassment, extortion, and abuse by security operatives, noting that similar enforcement efforts in the past had led to widespread complaints from the public.

It called on the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to respect the rule of law, engage relevant stakeholders, and explore lawful and transparent alternatives to address security concerns associated with the use of tinted glass in vehicles.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police Force had yet to officially respond to the NBA’s threat
