CAN alleges plot to keep north divided through targeted killings of Christians

The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Reverend Joseph John Hayab, has raised alarm over what he described as a deliberate plan by certain elements to keep the North divided through the targeted killing of Christians.

Reverend Hayab made the allegation while reacting to the spate of violent attacks and insecurity across parts of Northern Nigeria. He claimed that the persistent attacks on Christian communities were not accidental but part of a wider agenda aimed at deepening ethnic and religious divisions in the region.

According to him, such acts of violence threaten the long-standing coexistence among Nigerians in the North and undermine efforts toward peace, unity, and development. He warned that allowing insecurity and religiously motivated killings to continue unchecked could further destabilise the region.

The CAN chairman called on the Federal Government and security agencies to urgently investigate the alleged plot and ensure that those behind the attacks are brought to justice. He also urged political, traditional, and religious leaders to speak out against violence and work collectively to promote unity and peaceful coexistence.

Reverend Hayab appealed to Christians and other residents of the North to remain calm and law-abiding, stressing that violence should not be met with retaliation, but with renewed commitment to peace and dialogue.

He further emphasised the need for decisive government action to protect lives and property, warning that failure to address the situation could have grave consequences for national unity and security.
