Akwa Ibom Assembly to consider bill criminalising affairs with married men
The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly is set to consider a controversial bill on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, which seeks to criminalise sexual relationships with married men.
According to information made available on Monday, the proposed legislation is sponsored by the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Her Excellency Senator Akon Inyang, and is expected to be passed into law by the state legislature if approved.
The bill reportedly prohibits any young girl, lady, or woman from engaging in a sexual relationship with a married man. It further stipulates a jail term of 10 years without an option of fine for any woman found guilty of the offence.
Under the same proposed law, the married man involved in such an act would be liable to a fine of ₦2 million.
If passed, the bill would represent one of the strictest moral-related laws in the state and has already begun to generate mixed reactions among residents and rights advocates, with critics questioning its constitutionality and enforcement, while supporters argue it could help protect marriages and promote family values.
As of the time of filing this report, the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has not issued an official statement confirming the final passage of the bill, while debates are expected to dominate plenary when lawmakers reconvene on Tuesday.
