AYC commends U.S. Intervention in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism

The Arewa Youth Council (AYC) has praised the renewed interest and reported intervention of the United States of America in Nigeria’s ongoing fight against terrorism, describing it as a significant show of international solidarity against extremist violence.

In a press statement issued in Abuja, the Council welcomed reports that U.S. forces carried out airstrikes against Islamic State (IS) elements operating in parts of Nigeria. The AYC noted that the targeted extremist groups have been responsible for attacks on innocent civilians, including Christians, Muslims, and traditional communities, contributing to widespread insecurity across Northern Nigeria and beyond.

The Council expressed deep concern over the continued activities of Islamic State affiliates and other terrorist organizations, whose campaigns of bombings, abductions, and violence have claimed thousands of lives, displaced families, and undermined national unity and development.

Referencing international media reports, including Sky News, the AYC cited comments attributed to former U.S. President Donald Trump confirming that the United States authorized airstrikes against Islamic State elements accused of targeting vulnerable civilians. AYC President, Comrade Dogo Shagari Arewa, described the development as encouraging, stating that the Council appreciates the U.S. government’s interest and intervention in addressing terrorism in Nigeria.

The AYC emphasized that terrorism is a common enemy of all Nigerians, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or region. According to the Council, the indiscriminate targeting of Christians, Muslims, and traditional communities underscores the fact that extremist groups do not represent any legitimate faith or culture but thrive on chaos and violence.

While commending the United States for its role, the Council called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to further strengthen collaboration with international partners, enhance intelligence gathering, and adequately equip the armed forces. It also stressed the importance of ensuring that counterterrorism operations respect human rights and protect innocent civilians across rural and urban communities at all levels.

In addition, the AYC urged community leaders, religious institutions, and youth groups nationwide to remain united against extremism, reject radicalization, and actively promote peace, tolerance, and coexistence among Nigerians.

The Council reaffirmed its commitment to a united, peaceful, and secure Nigeria, calling on the international community to sustain its support until terrorism is completely defeated and lasting peace is restored across the country.

The statement was signed by Comrade Dogo Shagari Arewa, National President of the Arewa Youth Council, Abuja.
