As Nasarawa works, a call for peace in politics

By Ali Abare

The political ground in Lafia Local Government has been shaking. It started when the speaker of the local council was suspended. This led to another event: the state assembly suspending the council chairman, Hon. Mohammed Haliru Arabo, for three months. All this is happening inside the ruling party, the APC.

These moves are not strange. The country and our state are slowly moving towards the 2027 elections. Realignments and calculations for that race have begun. But this is coming at a wrong time. It is happening when our Governor, His Excellency, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, is deep in work for the people. He is in the final part of his administration and is committed to delivering the promises of democracy.

So far, the Governor has shown focus. He has not allowed himself to be pulled into this disagreement. He stays on his chosen path of meaningful work. For this, he deserves commendation. He will surely work to keep the ruling party united as the election comes. But those who want to take his seat must also play their part. They must not create fights within the party on purpose.

It is still too early for campaigns. Those with ambition should rather support the Governor. They should help him sustain and even improve his projects for the state. The Governor himself has said that his first term did not do all he wanted. The national economy was a challenge. Now, with the new reforms from President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, the situation is changing. Governor Sule has said his government is in a hurry to do more for the people.

Any clear-sighted person in Nasarawa can see the changes. The state is becoming something important in the country. This is because of the effort and leadership from Governor Sule. That is why it is important to speak now. We must caution all political players. Those who want to be governor should not heat up the state because of their desire. They should not distract the Governor.

Governor Sule must be allowed to continue. He must be allowed to improve his speed and finish well. He wants to leave Nasarawa better than he found it. This goal should not be threatened by desperate and selfish plans. The APC must overcome this early trouble. The party has grown strong and must build on this strength. This is especially so because the main opposition party, the PDP, is in disarray.

This is a time for wisdom. As the old saying goes, a stitch in time saves nine. Let us fix small tears now before they become big holes. Let peace and progress lead the way.
