Yakubu Arrives in Qatar as Nigeria’s Ambassador, Begins Diplomatic Mission

Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, has arrived in Doha to formally assume his duties as Nigeria’s ambassador to Qatar.

Yakubu landed in the Qatari capital on Wednesday and was received at the airport by Ibrahim Fakhro, Director of the Protocol Department at Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, alongside 13 African ambassadors, according to a statement issued by Nigeria’s Ministry of Information and National Orientation on Thursday.

Also present to welcome the new envoy were Philip Mshelbila and Michael Ihekwaba.

Yakubu completed his tenure as INEC chairman in October 2025, making history as the first head of Nigeria’s electoral commission to serve two terms in office. He was among the 32 ambassadorial nominees submitted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the Senate for confirmation in November 2025.

In March 2026, Yakubu was officially designated as Nigeria’s non-career ambassador to Qatar as part of Tinubu’s diplomatic appointments, which included 31 non-career ambassadors and 34 career ambassadors.

As Nigeria’s chief diplomatic representative in Qatar, Yakubu is expected to play a key role in strengthening bilateral relations, promoting trade and investment opportunities, and creating structured channels for directing diaspora remittances into productive sectors of the Nigerian economy.

Energy cooperation remains a major area of engagement between the two countries. Analysts believe Yakubu’s tenure could help deepen collaboration in the gas sector by leveraging Qatar’s status as one of the world’s leading liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporters and Nigeria’s vast natural gas reserves.

Nigeria and Qatar established diplomatic relations in 2010 and opened embassies in Abuja and Doha in 2013. Relations have continued to grow through high-level visits, including that of former President Muhammadu Buhari to Qatar in 2016 and the 2019 visit to Nigeria by Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

President Tinubu also visited Qatar in 2024, during which both countries signed several agreements and memoranda of understanding aimed at expanding political, economic and investment cooperation.
