Women Supporting Women: More Than Just a Hashtag

By Empress Ejiwumi Omowumi Olabisi

In today’s digital world, hashtags have become powerful tools for raising awareness and inspiring conversations. Among them, #WomenSupportingWomen has gained global recognition, encouraging women to uplift and celebrate one another. But beyond the trending posts, beautiful photographs, and inspiring captions lies a fundamental question: Are we truly supporting one another, or are we simply participating in another social media trend?

True support is not measured by likes, comments, or reposts. It is reflected in genuine actions that create opportunities, build confidence, and transform lives. It means celebrating another woman’s success without envy, mentoring those who are just starting their journey, recommending women for opportunities, supporting women-owned businesses, and standing beside one another during difficult times.

The reality is that many women continue to face barriers in business, leadership, education, politics, and entrepreneurship. They often struggle to access funding, networks, mentorship, and opportunities that can help them thrive. While governments, organisations, and development partners all have important roles to play, women themselves possess an incredible ability to change this narrative by intentionally lifting one another.

Supporting another woman does not require extraordinary wealth or influence. Sometimes, it is as simple as sharing information about a job opening, introducing someone to a valuable contact, offering words of encouragement, purchasing products from a woman-owned business, or providing honest guidance that helps another woman avoid costly mistakes. Small acts of kindness and generosity can have life-changing consequences.

One of the greatest gifts an experienced woman can offer is mentorship. Every successful woman has a story of challenges, failures, lessons, and victories. Sharing those experiences can shorten another woman’s learning curve and give her the confidence to pursue her dreams. Instead of viewing younger women as competition, we should see them as the next generation of leaders whose success strengthens our communities and our nation.
Likewise, women who are just beginning their journeys should not hesitate to seek guidance, ask questions, and learn from those who have walked the path before them. Growth flourishes where humility meets generosity.

Unfortunately, society sometimes encourages unhealthy competition among women. Too often, women are compared with one another instead of being celebrated for their unique talents and contributions. This mindset creates unnecessary divisions and weakens collective progress. There is room for every woman to succeed. Another woman’s achievement does not diminish your own potential; instead, it proves that success is possible.
Economic empowerment also plays a vital role in genuine support. Choosing to patronise women-owned businesses, recommending their services, investing in their ideas, and promoting their work can create sustainable livelihoods for families and communities. When one woman succeeds economically, she often reinvests in her family, educates children, supports relatives, and contributes to community development. The ripple effect extends far beyond one individual.
Support must also be present during life’s difficult moments. Whether a woman is facing illness, financial hardship, grief, domestic challenges, or career setbacks, compassion and solidarity matter. Sometimes, simply listening without judgment or offering practical help can restore hope to someone who feels alone.

As women continue to break barriers across every sector, we must move beyond symbolic gestures. Conferences, campaigns, and hashtags are valuable because they create awareness, but awareness must inspire action. Real empowerment happens when women intentionally create opportunities for one another, open doors that were once closed, and celebrate collective progress over individual recognition.

Every woman has something valuable to offer. You may not have financial resources, but you may have knowledge. You may not hold a leadership position, but you may have influence within your community. You may not own a large business, but you can choose where you spend your money. You may not be able to solve every problem, but you can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life.

The true spirit of #WomenSupportingWomen is not found in a trending hashtag—it is found in daily acts of kindness, collaboration, mentorship, integrity, and encouragement. It is reflected in the deliberate choice to uplift rather than undermine, to celebrate rather than compete, and to build rather than divide.
When women genuinely support women, families become stronger, businesses flourish, communities prosper, and future generations inherit a world where opportunity is based on ability rather than limitation.

Let us make #WomenSupportingWomen more than a slogan. Let it become a way of life. Because when one woman rises, she creates the possibility for countless others to rise with her.
