The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Monday morning received the remains of Senator Barinada Mpigi at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

Mpigi, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District, passed away in London on February 19, 2026, at the age of 64.

Wike arrived at the airport around 5:30 a.m., accompanied by several dignitaries, to receive the late lawmaker’s body. He also received Mpigi’s wife, Patricia Obiageri Mpigi, and their children.

Notable figures in attendance included Mao Ohuabunwa, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party; Senators Philip Aduda, Magnus Abe, Allwell Onyesoh, and Olaka Nwogu; House of Representatives Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda; Ambassador Desmond Akawor; and Victor Giadom, National Vice Chairman (South-South) of the All Progressives Congress, among others.

Wike had earlier travelled to London last week to sympathize with the bereaved family and coordinate arrangements for the return of the late senator’s remains to Nigeria.
