2027: Wike Insists Kingibe Won’t Secure Second Term
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has restated his position that Senator Ireti Kingibe will not return to the Senate in 2027, arguing that she lacks visible achievements to justify another term.
Speaking during a media parley in Abuja on Monday, Wike said his stance is based on what he described as the senator’s failure to deliver meaningful projects for residents of the FCT.
He maintained that he had made the prediction over a year ago, challenging Kingibe to point to any notable project executed during her tenure.
Kingibe, who represents the FCT under the Labour Party after her 2023 election victory, was also accused by the minister of being largely absent from satellite communities—areas he noted are critical in determining electoral outcomes.
Wike reiterated that her limited presence in these communities could affect her chances in future elections.
The latest remarks come amid ongoing tensions between both politicians. Kingibe had earlier accused Wike of neglecting her communications regarding rising insecurity in the territory and questioned his commitment to addressing key issues such as water shortages and residents’ welfare.
Addressing criticisms over his presence at polling units during the recent FCT area council elections, Wike defended his actions, stating that, as the chief security officer of the territory, he has a responsibility to monitor developments firsthand.
He clarified that he was not a contestant in the election and dismissed suggestions that his presence influenced the voting process, noting that he neither appeared on the ballot nor directed voters to support any political party.
