Tinubu Urges Unity, Defends Reforms at APC National Convention
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for unity within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as the party’s greatest strength, while defending his administration’s economic reforms and policy direction.
Speaking at the party’s 4th Elective National Convention held at Eagle Square in Abuja, the President said the gathering marked a defining moment for both the APC and Nigeria’s democracy, urging members to remain committed to the ideals that birthed the party.
Tinubu stressed that progress cannot be achieved without unity, warning against internal divisions driven by personal ambition and ego. According to him, the convention should send a clear message that the APC remains strong, focused, and prepared for the future.
Reflecting on the party’s formation in 2013, the President said the APC was created as a vehicle for national transformation, not merely a platform for political power. He paid tribute to past leaders, including former President Muhammadu Buhari, calling for a moment of silence in their honour.
Addressing criticisms from opposition parties, Tinubu dismissed claims surrounding the Electoral Act 2026, insisting the law followed due legislative processes and reflects Nigeria’s commitment to credible elections and democratic consolidation.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” noting that difficult economic reforms were necessary to reposition the country for long-term growth. He highlighted improvements in infrastructure, foreign investment, and economic indicators, including declining inflation, increased trade surpluses, and renewed investor confidence.
Tinubu also acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly in the power sector, revealing plans to establish a Grid Asset Management Company (GAMCO) to boost electricity supply and modernise transmission infrastructure.
He emphasized that Nigeria is transitioning from economic instability to stability and eventual prosperity, assuring citizens that current sacrifices would yield lasting benefits.
The President further called for greater inclusion of youths and women in governance and party leadership, urging the APC to create more opportunities for them as decision-makers.
Commending the convention’s organisers, including Aminu Bello Masari and Anyim Pius Anyim, Tinubu praised party leaders and governors for ensuring a successful event.
He concluded by urging party members to conduct themselves with integrity and accept the outcomes of the convention in good faith, stressing that the unity and progress of the APC must remain paramount.
