Tinubu Orders DSS Protection for All 2027 Presidential Candidates
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Department of State Services (DSS) to provide comprehensive security protection for all presidential candidates and their running mates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The directive, issued on Thursday, covers candidates across all political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ticket of Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
According to sources cited by The Nation, Tinubu directed the security agencies to adopt non-partisan protective measures for all presidential candidates and their deputies, regardless of the intensity or tone of their campaigns.
One of the sources said the President was committed to ensuring a free and fair election and had instructed security agencies to provide a level playing field for all contestants.
“The president is determined to win a free and fair poll. As a democrat, he has charged security agencies to ensure a level-playing field for all,” the source said.
The DSS has reportedly commenced deployment, with personnel assigned to provide protection around the various candidates. Some presidential contenders have also presented their preferred security arrangements for consideration by the Service.
The security measures will extend beyond the presidential election, as governorship candidates and their running mates across the country are also expected to receive DSS protection during the campaign period.
Candidates contesting National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly seats in areas considered vulnerable to political violence will equally receive enhanced security attention.
The source disclosed that states considered potential flashpoints had already been identified and placed under surveillance ahead of the legislative elections.
The Presidency said the broader objective was to create a secure campaign environment and ensure a smooth electoral process.
The directive comes amid heightened political activities ahead of the 2027 elections, with political parties stepping up consultations, strategy sessions and preparations for rallies.
Security agencies have previously expressed concerns about political violence, intimidation and attacks on campaign convoys during election periods.
The administration believes that providing security protection for all candidates ahead of the elections will help prevent threats and intimidation from influencing the political contest.
The DSS is expected to work with the Nigeria Police Force, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and state governments to coordinate security deployments and respond to emerging threats throughout the electoral period.
