Tinubu Announces Key Appointments Across Education Sector Agencies

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a series of strategic appointments and tenure renewals across major education sector institutions, signaling a continued push to strengthen governance and reform in the system.

The appointments were announced in a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, on April 22, 2026.

The appointments affect key agencies under the Federal Ministry of Education, including the National Examinations Council (NECO), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the Federal Polytechnic in N’yak-Shendam, Plateau State, and the National Library of Nigeria.

As part of the changes, President Tinubu named Modupe Adeola Adelabu as Chairman of NECO’s Governing Board, while retaining Ibrahim Dantani Wushishi as Registrar. Adelabu, a former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State and ex-NBTE Chairman, brings decades of experience in educational administration.

In the technical education space, Babatunde Salako was appointed Chairman of NBTE. A former Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Salako is widely recognized for his contributions to research development and institutional reforms.

Meanwhile, Idris M Bugaje has been reappointed as NBTE Executive Secretary for a second and final five-year term, following an earlier decision by the President on April 10.

In Plateau State, Bongfa Binfa has been appointed Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, N’yak-Shendam, for a single five-year term. He succeeds Mukaila Zakari Ya’u, whose tenure ended in March 2026. Binfa holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and previously served as Deputy Rector at the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas, Bonny.

At the National Library, President Tinubu renewed the tenure of Chinwe Veronica Anunobi as Director/Chief Executive Officer for a final five-year term. Since her initial appointment in 2021, Anunobi has overseen major reforms, including the development of national digital knowledge platforms and progress toward completing the National Library headquarters in Abuja.

According to the presidency, the renewal is intended to ensure continuity in ongoing reforms, facilitate the completion of critical infrastructure projects, and support the implementation of the institution’s 2025–2030 strategic plan.
