The General Behind the Successful Rescue of Oyo’s Abducted Pupils and Teachers
Major General Chinedu Ralph Nnebeife, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, Ibadan, coordinated the intelligence-led operation that resulted in the unconditional release of 44 pupils and teachers abducted by terrorists in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The victims, who were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, were held captive in the Old Oyo National Park forest for 54 days before regaining their freedom following a carefully planned and executed rescue mission.
According to details of the operation, Major General Nnebeife directed the coordinated security efforts in collaboration with special units from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), including the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), the Defence Headquarters, Special Forces of the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), as well as local vigilantes, hunters and members of the Amotekun Corps.

The joint security operation successfully secured the unconditional release of all 44 abducted pupils and teachers after weeks of sustained intelligence gathering and coordinated action.
The rescue has been widely hailed as a major success for Nigeria’s security agencies, with commendations pouring in for the gallantry, professionalism and sacrifice of the personnel involved.
Tributes have also been paid to security operatives who lost their lives during the operation, with prayers offered for the repose of the fallen heroes and appreciation expressed to all members of the security forces for their service to the nation.
