Nigeria Has Lost a Media Light, Opeifa Mourns Dotun Oladipo

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr Kayode Opeifa, has described the death of former President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), Dotun Oladipo, as a major loss to Nigeria’s media industry and the nation.

Oladipo, who was 56, was the publisher of The Eagle Online until his death. He was also a former Politics Editor of The Punch newspaper and a member of the Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE) and the International Press Institute (IPI).

The veteran journalist reportedly died on Tuesday, shortly after arriving at his office. He was said to have collapsed in his car while being taken to the hospital, where efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

In a condolence message issued by the NRC Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, Opeifa said Oladipo’s contributions to journalism, particularly political reporting and the development of digital media, would remain indelible.

He commended the deceased for his commitment to sanitising Nigeria’s online publishing space and his role in strengthening professional standards within the digital media industry.

According to Opeifa, Oladipo’s career demonstrated the vital role of journalists in informing citizens, holding public officials accountable and providing platforms for constructive public discourse.

The NRC boss recalled Oladipo’s passion for journalism and described him as a critical thought leader and a game changer whose contributions had significantly influenced the growth of digital journalism in Nigeria.

“Dotun Oladipo’s death at the age of 56 is a painful loss to the Nigerian media community and to our nation. He was a committed believer in Nigeria’s democracy and through his public discourse you can see through him as a patriot who loves and is willing to protect public causes,” Opeifa said.

He extended his condolences to Oladipo’s wife, children, family members, friends and colleagues, praying that God would grant the deceased eternal rest and give his family the strength to bear the loss.

“His contributions to political journalism and the digital media space will certainly not be forgotten,” Opeifa added.
