Senegal Rejects CAF Verdict, Vows to Retain AFCON 2025 Title
Senegal have pushed back strongly against a decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to strip them of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and award it to tournament hosts Morocco.
Augustin Senghor, former CAF First Vice President and current head of its legal committee, criticized the ruling, describing it as an overreach that undermines the authority of match officials. In a post shared on X, Senghor expressed outrage at what he called an attempt to override the outcome of the final.
He maintained that Senegal remain the rightful champions and declared that the country would not relinquish the trophy under any circumstances, insisting that both Africa and the global football community would ultimately recognise the true winners.
In a further show of defiance, Senegal’s national team, the Teranga Lions, are reportedly planning to present the AFCON trophy during their upcoming friendly against Peru at the Stade de France on March 28.
Meanwhile, the Senegalese Football Federation has condemned the decision as unfair and confirmed plans to challenge it at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), signaling that the dispute is far from over.
