Coalition of Civil Society Groups Applauds Peaceful Conduct of 2026 Osun Governorship Election

A coalition of civil society organisations has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies and the people of Osun State for the peaceful conduct of the 2026 governorship election.

The Democracy and Good Governance Watch Initiative (DGGWI), in a statement issued on Monday, August 17, 2026, in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, described the conduct of the election as a positive development for Nigeria’s democratic process.

The group said the peaceful and credible nature of the poll demonstrated the commitment of the Tinubu administration to strengthening the country’s electoral system ahead of the 2027 general elections.

DGGWI particularly praised INEC for what it described as impartiality, professionalism and commitment to conducting a credible election.

It also commended the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies for their conduct before, during and after the election, saying their deployment helped maintain peace and allowed voters to exercise their franchise without undue interference.

The organisation equally praised the people of Osun State for turning out to vote and choosing candidates according to their preferences.

“We want to commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, INEC and the security agencies for the peaceful and credible conduct of the 2026 gubernatorial election in Osun State,” the group said.

According to DGGWI, President Tinubu had once again demonstrated his commitment to ensuring that elections in Nigeria are free, fair and credible.
The group stated that INEC’s conduct reflected its commitment to non-partisanship and professionalism, while the security agencies were commended for providing adequate security without interfering in the electoral process.

“The people of Osun State, you showed doggedness and commitment to the process, which is highly commendable,” the statement added.

DGGWI also extended its commendation to the media as well as local and international observer organisations for their roles in monitoring and reporting the election.

It said the contributions of these stakeholders had helped to promote transparency and deepen democratic values in Nigeria.

The statement was jointly endorsed by Nelson Ekujumi, Gbenga Soloki and Ajayi Popoola on behalf of the Democracy and Good Governance Watch Initiative.
