Residents Flee as Loud Explosions Hit Parts of Maiduguri
Residents of Maiduguri were gripped by fear on Monday evening after a series of loud explosions shook parts of the city, sparking panic among locals.
The blasts were suspected to have been caused by Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) allegedly planted by terrorists believed to be linked to Boko Haram.
According to residents, the explosions were heard around the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, the busy Monday Market Roundabout, and the Elkanemi area, sending people in the vicinity scrambling for safety.
Witnesses said the first explosion occurred at about 7 p.m., shortly after Muslims broke their fast during the holy month of Ramadan.
The blasts caused widespread panic, with residents fleeing the affected areas while security personnel and emergency responders swiftly moved in to assess the situation.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to confirm if there were casualties from the explosions.
The incident came only hours after suspected terrorists launched an attack on a military position in Ajilari, a community on the outskirts of Maiduguri. During the assault, the attackers reportedly set sections of the military facility ablaze and escaped with a patrol vehicle.
Security sources later revealed that troops responded to the attack and engaged the assailants, killing some of them while others fled with gunshot wounds.
Security agencies have since heightened surveillance across parts of the city as investigations continue, while efforts are underway to restore calm and ensure public safety.
