Peter Obi Endorses Seyi Makinde for 2027 Presidency

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has expressed support for the presidential ambition of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, declaring that the governor is qualified to become Nigeria’s president.

Obi made the remarks on Monday in Abuja while attending the inauguration of Makinde’s presidential campaign office ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at the event, Obi described Makinde as his “dear brother” and said Nigerians should be allowed to freely choose their preferred candidate in a credible election.

“We want a Nigeria of unity and inclusion; we have a candidate who is contesting for President today, my dear brother Makinde. Is he qualified to be President? Yes, he is qualified,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor stressed that the 2027 contest should not be driven by desperation or personal interests, urging opposition politicians to work together in the broader interest of the country.

He said whoever emerges victorious through a free, fair and credible election should receive the support of other political leaders to rebuild the country.

Obi also criticised what he described as the prevailing politics of confrontation, saying political disagreements should instead focus on addressing poverty, hunger and insecurity.

“We don’t want politics of quarrel, politics of disagreement. Let our quarrel be to feed our people. Let our quarrel be to pull our people out of poverty,” he said.

Makinde, who is contesting the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), and Obi are both opposition candidates seeking to replace President Bola Tinubu.

Obi’s appearance at the launch has generated interest because both politicians are presidential contenders, with his remarks potentially reinforcing calls for greater cooperation among opposition figures ahead of the 2027 election.
