Outrage as Defence Minister Musa Declares “No One Innocent” in Jilli Market

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Christopher Gwabin Musa, has sparked widespread reactions following controversial remarks suggesting that residents and traders in Jilli Market were complicit in illicit activities.

Speaking on the situation in the area, the Defence Chief stated that “nobody in that area (Jilli Market) is innocent,” alleging that individuals profit from trading essential goods at inflated prices.

He cited examples of food items and fuel being resold at significantly higher rates, claiming that such activities contribute to the ongoing insecurity in the region.

According to Musa, a bag of rice taken into the area could be sold for as much as N150,000, while fuel supplied is often resold at a premium, generating substantial profits for those involved.

The remarks have drawn criticism from various quarters, with observers warning that the statement risks generalising entire communities already affected by conflict.

Analysts argue that such comments could undermine trust between civilians and security forces, particularly in regions battling insurgency and economic hardship.

Residents and civil society groups have called for a more nuanced approach, stressing that many people in such areas are victims of circumstance rather than active collaborators in criminal activities.

They urged the government to focus on strengthening intelligence gathering and protecting innocent civilians while addressing the root causes of black-market trading.

The Defence Ministry has yet to issue a clarification on the statement, as debate continues over the implications of the remarks for Nigeria’s counterinsurgency efforts.
