Outrage as Bishop Dayo Olutayo introduces new wife
… Bishop Professor Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies Call for Repentance and Reconciliation
A major controversy has erupted within Nigeria’s Christian community following the public introduction of a new wife by Bishop Dayo Olutayo, the General Overseer of Unity Worship Centre, barely months after the alleged divorce of his wife of over three decades, Boluwatife (Bolu) Olutayo.
The announcement was made during a Thanksgiving service held on December 14, 2025, where Bishop Olutayo reportedly introduced Funmilola Akinrinde as his wife and the new “Mummy GO” of the church. The move has sparked widespread outrage, confusion, and accusations of infidelity and moral recklessness among congregants and the wider public.
According to multiple reports, Bishop Olutayo told the congregation that he had “never been married” before, a statement that shocked members who were well aware of his long-standing marriage to Bolu Olutayo, his wife of approximately 33–36 years. Allegations have since emerged that Bolu was expelled from their marital home, reportedly due to the bishop’s relationship with Akinrinde.
Bolu Olutayo, a business consultant, network marketer, and life coach, co-founded the Dayo and Bolu Olutayo Foundation with her husband, an organisation dedicated to supporting distressed individuals. The couple has three sons together and were long regarded as a model pastoral family.
The situation has triggered serious concerns about pastoral accountability, marital fidelity, and the influence of prosperity-driven leadership within churches. Some church members have openly vowed to leave the congregation, citing Bishop Olutayo’s alleged lavish lifestyle, claims of multiple extramarital affairs, and accusations that church funds were used to support mistresses—allegations the bishop has not publicly addressed.
Amid the growing controversy, Bishop Professor Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies has issued a strong public call, urging Bishop Olutayo to repent and reconcile with his wife in the spirit of Christian love and biblical obedience. In her statement, she referenced key scriptures including Hebrews 13:17, 1 Corinthians 10:12, and 1 Timothy 3:2, emphasizing that a bishop must be “blameless” and faithful in marriage.
Bishop Adesanya-Davies further called on Bishop Olutayo to voluntarily step aside from pastoral oversight, submit himself to biblical accountability, and prioritize the sanctity and holiness of the episcopal office over personal desires.
The unfolding saga has ignited nationwide discussions on marriage, divorce, leadership integrity, and moral responsibility among clergy in Nigeria. As reactions continue to pour in, many observers say the outcome of this controversy may set an important precedent for accountability within the Nigerian church.
