Oge Onubogu Shines at U.S. Congress Public Hearing on Nigeria’s Security Challenges

Ms. Oge Onubogu emerged as one of the most compelling voices at the recently concluded live transmission of the U.S. Congress Public Hearing on Nigeria, earning praise for her balanced, deeply informed analysis of the country’s security landscape.

Addressing members of the panel — including Senator Jeff Merkley and Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove, as well as Senator Moore whose engagement reflected strong interest in the issues raised — Onubogu highlighted the urgent need for a nuanced understanding of Nigeria’s multifaceted crises.

She emphasized that Nigeria’s security challenges are “more complex than often portrayed,” urging U.S. policymakers to resist simplified narratives that could distort the realities on the ground. In particular, she cautioned against framing the situation as a narrowly defined “Christian genocide,” noting that such interpretations overlook the multiplicity of actors, motives, and regional dynamics at play.

Onubogu also warned that overt or implied threats from the United States have already begun to deepen political and social divisions within Nigeria. Such approaches, she argued, risk aggravating tensions rather than supporting long-term stability.

The crisis, she noted, does not only endanger Nigeria’s internal cohesion but also threatens the security and economic well-being of the broader West African sub-region.

During her testimony, she underscored how institutional weaknesses and a persistent lack of political will — spanning successive Nigerian administrations — have allowed the crisis to escalate. Effective intervention, she said, would require strengthening governance structures and rebuilding public trust across all levels of government.

Crucially, Onubogu advocated for any U.S. support or intervention to be coordinated collaboratively with Nigeria’s Federal, State, and Local governments to ensure legitimacy, sustainability, and real impact.

Her clear, measured, and evidence-based contributions drew commendation from the congressional panel and resonated strongly with viewers following the live broadcast.
