Nigeria Confirms Arrival of U.S. Military Advisers for Training, Intelligence Support
The Director of Defence Information, , has confirmed that United States military personnel have arrived in Nigeria.
In a statement released on Monday, Maj.-Gen. Uba clarified that the American personnel are technical experts assigned strictly to advisory and training roles, emphasizing that they are not combat troops.
He explained that all planned training exercises will operate under the full authority and direction of the Nigerian Government, in close collaboration with the Nigerian Armed Forces. Nigerian troops will work alongside the advisers in a series of joint training programmes and intelligence-driven cooperation efforts.
According to Uba, the initiative is aimed at strengthening the operational capacity of Nigerian forces to better detect, counter, and dismantle extremist and terrorist groups attempting to undermine national stability.
He reaffirmed the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to eliminating terrorist threats and safeguarding the country’s sovereignty, security, and citizens.
The deployment, he noted, followed discussions between Nigerian officials and their U.S. counterparts during a bilateral working group engagement. It was described as a carefully planned response to a formal request by the Federal Government of Nigeria seeking targeted military training, technical assistance, and intelligence-sharing support.
Uba added that the partnership will grant Nigeria access to specialised technical expertise designed to improve counterterrorism capabilities and enhance the protection of vulnerable communities nationwide.
He assured Nigerians that Defence Headquarters will maintain transparency by providing accurate, timely, and clear updates on the ongoing military cooperation.
