NCC Reaffirms Drive to Expand Broadband Access in Plateau’s Underserved Communities

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reiterated its commitment to expanding broadband access to underserved communities in Plateau State, as part of efforts to bridge the digital divide and unlock socio-economic opportunities through improved connectivity.

This assurance was given during a courtesy visit by the NCC’s Executive Commissioner for Stakeholder Management, Rimini Makama, to Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, at the Government House in Rayfield, Jos.

The Commission described Plateau as a strategic partner in advancing Nigeria’s broadband agenda, citing its strong educational institutions, youthful population, and growing innovation ecosystem. It also highlighted policy initiatives by the state government, including Right of Way reforms and commitments made at tech-focused events, as indicators of readiness for digital transformation.

Makama noted that while the state shows significant digital potential, many rural local government areas remain cut off from reliable internet access, limiting opportunities for education, entrepreneurship, and access to digital services.

“Bridging that divide is a shared responsibility, and the NCC is ready to fulfil its part,” she said, adding that the Commission aims to align its initiatives with the state’s development agenda, including leveraging the Universal Service Provision Fund to extend connectivity to remote communities.

Responding, Governor Mutfwang welcomed the Commission’s recognition of Plateau’s digital potential, describing the visit as timely and aligned with his administration’s declaration of 2025 as a year of digital innovation.

He stressed the importance of moving from policy frameworks to tangible implementation, particularly in emerging areas such as Artificial Intelligence. The governor also highlighted ongoing collaborations with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to establish an innovation hub at Plateau State Polytechnic, as well as an existing partnership with Solitran to accelerate broadband deployment across the state.

Mutfwang further disclosed plans to launch a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) initiative aimed at creating at least 500 remote jobs for young people in Jos, underscoring the urgency of leveraging digital opportunities to boost employment and economic growth.

He also called for a coordinated, technology-driven approach to governance, noting that modern digital systems are essential for improving service delivery and driving innovation across sectors.
