May Day: Akpabio Hails Nigerian Workers’ Resilience, Pledges Legislative Support
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has congratulated Nigerian workers on the occasion of International Workers’ Day, commending their resilience, patriotism, and hard work despite prevailing challenges.
In a personally signed May Day message, Akpabio lauded workers across all sectors for their contributions to national development, describing them as “the true heroes of our democracy and the engine of our economy.”
He said Nigerian workers—including teachers, farmers, healthcare professionals, artisans, traders, civil servants, security personnel, and private sector employees—remain the backbone of the nation’s progress through their daily sacrifices and dedication.
The Senate President acknowledged the economic and workplace challenges confronting workers, particularly rising living costs and increasing job demands. He, however, assured that the 10th National Assembly remains committed to enacting laws that promote workers’ welfare.
According to him, efforts are ongoing to ensure a living wage, safer working conditions, pension reforms, and policies aimed at job creation and the protection of workers’ dignity. He cited the passage of the National Minimum Wage Act and the implementation of welfare packages as key steps in that direction.
Akpabio also called on employers in both the public and private sectors to prioritize workers’ welfare, stressing that a motivated workforce is critical to national productivity and economic growth.
He further commended organised labour unions, including the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, for their constructive engagement and patriotism, pledging continued collaboration to ensure workers’ voices are reflected in policymaking.
Reaffirming the Senate’s commitment, Akpabio said the National Assembly would not relent in its efforts until every Nigerian worker can look to the future with hope, dignity, and confidence.
The message was conveyed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh.
