Kwara Government Charges Saraki, Ahmed Over Offa Robbery Killings

The Kwara State Government has formally charged former Senate President Bukola Saraki and former Governor Abdulfatai Ahmed, along with others, to court over their alleged roles in the 2018 Offa armed robbery incident, which claimed multiple lives.

In a 20-count charge filed by the state’s Attorney-General, Ibrahim Sulyman, the defendants are accused of culpable homicide, criminal conspiracy, and the alleged arming of key suspects involved in the robbery that took place in Offa in April 2018.

Those charged alongside Saraki and Ahmed include Ahmed’s former Chief of Staff, Yusuf Abdulwahab, and an aide, Alabi Olalekan. If found guilty, the defendants could face the maximum penalty under the law, including death by hanging.

The case, marked KWS/114C/26, follows a ruling by the Court of Appeal which upheld the conviction of several suspects linked to the robbery. Among them is Ayo Akinnibosun, who reportedly confessed during trial proceedings to acting as a hitman connected to Saraki’s political structure.

The charges, dated April 9, 2026, are expected to be served on the defendants on April 17, with arraignment scheduled for June 4 before Justice Haleemah Salman of the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin.

Authorities recalled that vehicles and other exhibits linked to the robbery were recovered in 2018 from locations including the Kwara State Government House and a state ministry. These materials were presented as evidence during earlier trials that led to the conviction of the robbery suspects.

While Saraki has denied any association with Akinnibosun, reports indicated that the two were seen together in photographs taken at a family wedding. Additionally, Akinnibosun and members of his group were said to have accompanied Saraki on a condolence visit to Offa following the robbery.

The upcoming trial is expected to draw significant public attention as it revisits one of the most high-profile criminal cases in the state’s recent history.
