E-Transmission Debate Began Under Buhari
…. Amaechi Warned Against Signing – Wike
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has revealed fresh details about internal political disagreements during the administration of Muhammadu Buhari, particularly over the introduction of electronic transmission of election results.
Speaking during a media chat on Channels Television on Monday, March 2, 2026, Wike disclosed that the push for e-transmission originated under Buhari’s government but faced resistance from key political figures.
According to him, Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation, had advised Buhari against signing the electoral amendment that would allow electronic transmission, warning that it could jeopardise electoral victory.
Wike said the issue sparked intense debate within political circles at the time, as stakeholders weighed the potential impact of adopting digital transmission of results.
He noted that the proposal generated widespread attention, attracting interest from politicians, civil society groups, and non-governmental organisations, who viewed it as a step toward improving transparency in Nigeria’s electoral process.
The minister stressed that discussions around electoral reforms should always prioritise credibility and public confidence, adding that his remarks were intended to provide insight into past political decisions while highlighting the need to strengthen democratic institutions in the country.
