Crisis Rocks Ifelodun Legislative Council as Deputy Speaker, Majority Leader Ousted

Tensions flared in the Ifelodun Local Government Legislative Council, Kwara State, after Speaker of the council abruptly announced the removal of the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Ismail Abdulkadir, and the Majority Leader, Hon. Ibrahim Akeem.

The announcement threw the chamber into disarray, sparking bitter arguments among councillors and triggering violent clashes outside the assembly complex. Security operatives were eventually called in, leading to the arrest of the Deputy Speaker, the Majority Leader, and Hon. Ibrahim of Idofian Ward 2.

Insiders revealed that the ouster of the principal officers came without warning, leaving lawmakers stunned. Some members condemned the Speaker’s action, describing it as politically driven and lacking justification.

Amidst the uproar, suspicion has fallen on the Council Chairman, Hon. Femi Yusuf, who is alleged to have engineered the shake-up. But Yusuf swiftly distanced himself from the development, insisting in a Thursday statement that he was not privy to the decision. He pledged to support efforts aimed at restoring calm and harmony in the council.

The arrests have deepened worries about the strained ties between the legislative and executive arms of the council. Observers caution that the standoff, if unresolved, could stall governance and disrupt essential services at the grassroots.

While the police have confirmed the arrests, they offered little clarity on what led to the lawmakers’ detention. Investigations are ongoing even as behind-the-scenes mediations intensify.

Community leaders and political stakeholders have appealed for restraint, urging both factions to embrace dialogue rather than confrontation. They warned that further escalation could paralyze the council’s operations and worsen political instability in Ifelodun.

For now, residents watch closely as uncertainty hangs over the council’s future—waiting to see whether peace will be restored or the crisis will escalate further.
