Bamidele’s Scorecard: Infrastructure, Empowerment and Legislative Footprints in Ekiti Central
By Olumide Bajulaiye
In Nigeria’s evolving democratic space, performance in office remains the ultimate test of leadership. For Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, the 9th National Assembly provided a platform to combine grassroots development with robust legislative engagement—leaving behind a footprint that spans infrastructure, human capital development and policy reforms across Ekiti Central Senatorial District.
Bridging Infrastructure Gaps at the Grassroots
Across Ekiti West, Efon-Alaaye, Ijero, Irepodun/Ifelodun and Ado-Ekiti local governments, Bamidele’s intervention focused heavily on improving access to basic amenities.
Dozens of motorized solar-powered boreholes were installed in communities, targeting water scarcity in both urban and rural areas. These projects, strategically located in places like Aramoko-Ekiti, Iyin-Ekiti, Ijero-Ekiti and Ado-Ekiti, have significantly reduced residents’ reliance on unsafe water sources.
Complementing this was the installation of solar-powered street lights across major roads and communities. From Aramoko to Ikogosi and Iyin-Ekiti, these projects enhanced security, improved nightlife commerce and reduced accidents.

Electricity supply also received attention through the provision of transformers in multiple communities, while social welfare was boosted with the establishment of day care centres for the elderly in Aramoko and Iyin-Ekiti—an uncommon but impactful intervention in community-based care.
Investments in Education and Technology
In Ado-Ekiti, the establishment of an ultra-modern ICT centre and library reflects a forward-looking approach to education and digital literacy. The facility provides young people with access to technology and learning resources, positioning them for opportunities in a digital economy.
Human Capital Development and Empowerment
Beyond infrastructure, Bamidele’s record shows a strong emphasis on skills acquisition and economic empowerment.
Thousands of constituents benefited from training programmes in entrepreneurship, vocational skills, agriculture and technical services. Youths were trained in phone repairs and enterprise development, while women participated in programmes covering tailoring, hairdressing, soap making and confectioneries.
Special consideration was also given to persons living with disabilities, with targeted training, empowerment schemes and mobility support such as wheelchairs.
Mega Empowerment Initiatives
The senator’s “mega empowerment” programmes distributed tools and equipment aimed at boosting small businesses and agriculture. Beneficiaries received items ranging from sewing machines and grinding machines to motorcycles, tricycles and minibuses.
Farmers were supported with fertilizers, sprayers, seedlings and processing machines, while health and security sectors were strengthened through donations of ambulances, ventilators and a patrol vehicle to the police.
COVID-19 Intervention
During the pandemic, Bamidele contributed financially and materially to relief efforts, including a ₦10 million donation to support distribution of drugs and food items. He also facilitated grants for nearly 1,000 constituents and supported hundreds through the N-Power scheme.
Legislative Contributions
At the national level, Bamidele played a key role in lawmaking, sponsoring and co-sponsoring numerous bills addressing critical issues such as sexual harassment in tertiary institutions, terrorism prevention, cyber misinformation, and justice sector reforms.
Notably, he sponsored the bill establishing the Federal University of Medical and Environmental Sciences, Iyin-Ekiti, which was passed by the Senate—marking a major milestone for education and healthcare development in the region.
Strategic Committee Roles
As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Bamidele was central to legal and institutional reforms. His membership in committees on finance, communications, INEC, and the Niger Delta further positioned him at the heart of national policymaking.
A Blend of Policy and People-Centered Governance
Bamidele’s 9th Assembly record reflects a dual approach—balancing legislative duties with constituency-focused development. From water and electricity to empowerment and legal reforms, his interventions highlight a model of representation that prioritizes both policy impact and everyday needs.
As political conversations around representation continue, his scorecard offers a detailed case study of how legislative offices can translate into tangible community development.
