Azubuike Ishiekwene – A Titan of Nigerian Journalism and Media Leadership

By Olugbenga Adebamiwa

Azubuike Ishiekwene, popularly known as Azu, was born on February 19, 1965, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Over the past three decades, he has emerged as one of Nigeria’s most influential journalists, editors, and media entrepreneurs. As Senior Vice Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of LEADERSHIP Newspapers, Azu has consistently shaped public discourse through incisive commentary on politics, governance, and society. His work transcends Nigeria, reaching Africa, Europe, and South America, earning him a reputation as a respected voice in both national and global journalism.

Born the only child to Robert and Jenny Ishiekwene of Delta State, Azu’s formative years emphasized education, discipline, and faith. He attended Christ The King Primary School, Ajegunle, then Gaskiya College, Cardoso, and Jibril Martins Memorial Grammar School, Iponri. He later earned a B.Sc. in Mass Communications and a Master’s in Public Administration and International Affairs, both from the University of Lagos. These early experiences shaped his unwavering commitment to integrity, social justice, and advocacy for the vulnerable principles that continue to guide his personal and professional life.

Azu’s journalism career began in 1986 at PUNCH Nigeria Ltd, officially joining in 1989. Over more than two decades, he held nearly every editorial position, from staff writer to executive director of publications. His tenure included leading the Sunday Desk, editing Toplife magazine, and serving as editor of Saturday PUNCH and PUNCH itself. Known for his analytical rigor and editorial vision, Azu reshaped newsroom practices and elevated journalistic standards. Though his departure in 2010 sparked public discussion, it did not tarnish his reputation as a principled, fearless journalist.

Since 2013, Azu has led LEADERSHIP Newspapers, writing weekly columns that dissect Nigerian politics, anti-corruption efforts, and global issues such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict and U.S. policy. His insights, combining historical context with contemporary analysis, have become essential reading for policymakers, thought leaders, and citizens alike. Beyond newspapers, he is Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of The Interview magazine, a board member of the Global Editors Network, and a pro bono educator mentoring future journalists at the University of Lagos and the Nigerian Institute of Journalism.

Azu is also an accomplished author. His book The Trial of Nuhu Ribadu chronicles Nigeria’s anti-corruption battles, while Writing for Media and Monetising It provides practical guidance for journalists, content creators, and bloggers seeking to thrive in an evolving media landscape. Praised for clarity, depth, and actionable insights, these works reflect his ability to blend sharp analysis with practical guidance. His writing style is compelling, often weaving anecdotes, historical insight, and nuanced critique into thoughtful, authoritative commentary.

Recognized as a Fellow of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Azu’s contributions have also earned national recognition, including commendation from President Bola Tinubu in 2025 for his “brilliant and incisive commentary.” Married to Oghenerume Ufuoma Ishiekwene, with three children and two grandchildren, Azu embodies the seamless integration of professional excellence, mentorship, personal integrity, and social responsibility. Today, he remains a cornerstone of Nigerian journalism, inspiring new generations, shaping public discourse, and elevating the standards of media and public thought across the nation and beyond.
