Airstrike Misses Target, Dozens Killed at Yobe Market
At least 56 people have been feared dead following a military airstrike that struck a crowded market in Jilli village, under Fichimaram Ward in Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State.
The air raid, believed to have been part of an operation targeting suspected Boko Haram insurgents, reportedly missed its intended target. Sources said the fighter jet was tracking a group of insurgents who had allegedly visited the market to collect levies from traders and procure supplies before the strike occurred.
Eyewitnesses said the attack happened around 2:46 p.m. while business activities were ongoing, causing panic as traders and residents fled for safety.
“Four fighter jets carried out the attack, though the fourth jet was not clearly visible. We only heard loud explosions,” one witness recounted. “I counted 56 bodies myself and helped rescue two injured persons to the hospital. The death toll may be higher as more bodies are still being recovered.”
Several injured victims were rushed to the Specialist Hospital in Geidam, where at least 14 people are currently receiving treatment.
Confirming the incident, the councillor of Fichimaram Ward, Malam Lawan Zanna, said initial reports indicated that more than 30 people were killed, with over 20 others hospitalized.
“The strike occurred at the weekly market in Jilli village. When the jets launched the attack, people ran in panic, but the bombardment continued,” he said. “Two of the injured were referred to the Teaching Hospital in Damaturu, and nine others have died while receiving treatment.”
The incident has raised concerns over civilian casualties in ongoing military operations in the region, as authorities are yet to release an official statement on the strike.
