Trust Deficit Worries INEC as Amupitan Seeks NPC Support
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on the National Peace Committee (NPC) and other key stakeholders to step up efforts aimed at rebuilding public trust and promoting peaceful participation as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), made the appeal on Monday during a stakeholder briefing and presentation of the Annotated Peace Accord held in Abuja. The event, organised by the NPC, brought together political party leaders, security chiefs, and civil society groups, highlighting a shared commitment to credible and peaceful polls.
Speaking at the forum, Amupitan stressed the urgent need to address the growing lack of confidence in the electoral process, describing it as a serious concern. He noted that voter participation is critical to the legitimacy of any election outcome, urging stakeholders to support efforts that will encourage citizens to actively engage in the process.
He further stated that INEC remains committed to transparency and continuous improvement, welcoming constructive feedback from the public. According to him, credible elections must not only meet legal standards but also earn public acceptance.
The INEC chairman also pointed out that ensuring credible elections is a collective responsibility. He urged political parties to improve internal discipline and intensify voter mobilisation, especially in light of declining turnout in recent elections.
Amupitan highlighted ongoing measures by the Commission to enhance results management and strengthen transparency, adding that new safeguards have already been tested in recent polls. He also warned against the dangers of misinformation, noting that false narratives can erode trust and heighten tensions during elections.
On electoral offences, particularly vote buying, he reaffirmed that such practices remain illegal and called on law enforcement agencies to ensure swift investigation and prosecution of offenders.
The chairman also disclosed that INEC is working to clean up the voter register by addressing duplication and outdated entries, describing it as essential for credible elections.
Looking ahead, he identified the upcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states as important tests for the Commission’s preparedness. He revealed plans for further technological trials, including mock exercises at selected polling units.
Amupitan also appealed for the timely release of election funds, stressing that early access to resources is vital for effective planning and logistics.
In remarks delivered on his behalf, former Head of State and NPC Chairman, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, reaffirmed the committee’s dedication to fostering dialogue and building trust among stakeholders. He noted that the Peace Accord has played a key role in stabilising Nigeria
