Tinubu Unveils Plan to Modernise Police, Boost Investment in Security Systems
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced plans to deepen investment in modern law enforcement systems, police training, and intelligence gathering as part of efforts to transform the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) into a world-class institution.
The President made this known on Tuesday at the 2026 National Police Day Grand Parade and Procession in Abuja, where he was represented by his Vice, Kashim Shettima.
Tinubu stressed that Nigeria’s progress is closely tied to the strength and capacity of its security institutions, noting that the government has a “permanent moral duty” to empower those responsible for safeguarding the nation.
He said the Federal Government would continue to invest in training, capacity development, modern equipment, and improved intelligence capabilities to enable the police effectively tackle evolving security challenges.
“We are determined to build a Police Force that is well equipped, well trained, and well-motivated to confront the complex security challenges of our time,” he stated.
The President highlighted the importance of security as the foundation for national development, adding that no country can achieve meaningful progress without a safe and stable environment. He also underscored the need for improved welfare and working conditions for police personnel.
Tinubu paid tribute to officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, describing their sacrifice as part of Nigeria’s enduring moral heritage, while extending condolences and gratitude to their families.
He further urged serving officers to uphold professionalism, fairness, and respect for the rule of law, warning against abuse of power.
“The uniform you wear is not a licence for arbitrariness; it is a covenant of service,” he said, while calling for stronger collaboration between citizens and law enforcement agencies through community-based policing.
In his remarks, the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, acknowledged public expectations and concerns, pledging reforms to enhance discipline, accountability, and professionalism within the force.
Disu assured Nigerians that the current police leadership is committed to building an intelligence-driven institution that prioritises ethical conduct and service delivery.
The event featured goodwill messages from Wema Bank and Premium Trust Bank, while the ceremony concluded with march-pasts, tactical displays, and processions by various police units and cadets of the Police Academy.
