Tinubu Makes History at Windsor Castle, Celebrates Nigeria–UK Ties and Shared Democratic Values

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s strong diplomatic and historical ties with the United Kingdom during a state banquet at Windsor Castle, describing the relationship between both nations as enduring and mutually beneficial.

Speaking before King Charles III, Queen Camilla, and senior members of the British Royal Family on Wednesday, Tinubu said it was a profound honour to represent Nigeria at the historic venue, noting that he is the first Nigerian leader to address a gathering at Windsor Castle.

The President highlighted centuries of shared history between Nigeria and the UK, emphasizing a common commitment to democracy, governance, and the rule of law. He referenced foundational milestones such as the Magna Carta, describing it as a cornerstone of democratic ideals that continue to influence governance systems worldwide, including Nigeria’s.

Tinubu also acknowledged the intellectual and cultural contributions of renowned British figures like Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Edmund Burke, and literary icons such as William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens, noting their lasting influence on global thought and the English language.

The Nigerian leader praised the contributions of Nigerians living in the UK, particularly in critical sectors such as healthcare. He noted that Nigerian professionals play a vital role within the National Health Service, forming one of the largest groups of international medical workers.

He also cited prominent athletes of Nigerian descent, including Maro Itoje, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, and Anthony Joshua, as symbols of the deep cultural and human connections between both countries.

On global cooperation, Tinubu stressed Nigeria’s commitment to working within the Commonwealth of Nations to promote shared growth and development, while also addressing security challenges in West Africa, particularly terrorism linked to the Sahel region.

He reaffirmed Nigeria’s willingness to strengthen security collaboration with the UK and disclosed plans to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to deepen bilateral cooperation.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s past, Tinubu expressed gratitude to the UK for offering refuge during the country’s years under military rule, recalling his personal experience during the pro-democracy struggle.

The President concluded his address with a toast to the continued friendship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, expressing optimism about a future built on shared values, partnership, and mutual respect.
